Communication-Based Design for Nanoscale SoCs:Conclusion

Conclusion

As the complexity of single chip systems continues to increase, a paradigm shift from computation-bound design to communication-bound design is inevitable. Scalable NoC architectures are promising solutions for complex on-chip communication problems. Widespread use of NoCs depends not only on the successful treatment of the science and engineering aspects of NoC design, but also on the successful interaction between the two of them. This chapter has addressed mostly the science of NoC design and its interaction with the engineering aspects. Specifically, application-specific NoC architecture customization via long-range link insertion was used as a vehicle to illustrate how the results from the science of the network can be actually connected to the actual implementations in silicon.
